Transit Future Victoria

 

BC Transit is developing the Transit Future Victoria plan with input from the community, local governments and the Victoria Regional Transit Commission. The plan will form a vision for the future of transit in the Victoria Region and develop a future transit network that will include a range of transit services such as rapid transit, frequent transit, local service, regional service and handyDART service.

The 25-Year Transit Network

The future transit network will identify key transit corridors, future transit services and the necessary fleet and facilities to serve the community. The planned network will use four layers of service to tailor different types of transit to community needs. The map below shows how proposed layers of rapid and frequent transit lines will create a spine for the system that will be complemented by local and specialty services.

Transit Future Victoria Plan Details

  1. Context
    The plan will include a review of current and future land use trends, demographic trends, and the travel patterns in the community and the transit system. This information will clarify the future transit needs of the Victoria Region to 2035.

  2. Vision and Goals
    Transit Future Victoria will define a long term vision and goals for transit services in the Victoria Region that will reflect the region's desires and aspirations. The vision will focus on building the convenience, efficiency and effectiveness of transit. It will also describe how progress will be monitored and measured.

  3. The 25-Year Transit Network
    As described above, the future transit network will identify key transit corridors and layers of service for the community.

  4. Implementation Plan
    The plan will broadly outline the evolution from the current transit system to the future vision and network by prioritizing the order of improvements to transit service and their supporting capital investments. This step will also provide meaningfully recommendations for approvals and next steps for BC Transit, local governments and other local transit partners.

  5. Community Engagement
    The Transit Future Plan includes collaboration with local government elected officials and staff, partner First Nations communities, local transit staff, transit customers, major employers and institutions, other stakeholder groups and the general public.
