Douglas Street has been the major transit spine in our region for many years. In 1998, the City of Victoria envisioned a new role for this corridor, designating it the preferred location for future rapid transit development. The area’s Regional Growth and Travel Choices strategies supported this vision, and after 9 years, it is about to be realized.
Phase 1: Make Transit a priority. Create a central traffic-control system to improve traffic flow on Douglas Street and implement signal priority for transit vehicles to reduce transit delays at traffic signals. This will be completed in Spring 2007.
Phase 2: Create a busway. Build a busway on Douglas Street from downtown to Saanich Road using the rapid transit right-of-way designated by the City of Victoria, and establish bike lanes adjacent to the curbs.
Phase 3 and beyond. BC Transit is working with the Ministry of Transportation and other municipalities to develop a high quality rapid bus service network on priority rights-of-way from downtown to Langford, the Saanich Peninsula and UVic.
