The McGruff Bus: A Safe Place To Be
The Vernon RCMP and the Vernon Regional Transit staff joined
forces to offer the McGruff Program. McGruff buses offer a safe
place for people who need help.
The McGruff Program is similar to the well-known Block Parent
Program.
In case of trouble, the driver can easily reach police and
ambulance services from the bus.
For more information about the McGruff Safe House Program,
call the Vernon Regional Transit System at 545-7221.
Bus Stops in Rural Areas (NORD only)
In rural areas with no designated bus stops, the bus driver
will stop for "flag stops". When you want to catch the bus,
find a safe location along the route and wave the bus down.
A safe location is one where visibility is good and where the
bus can easily pull off the road, such as a driveway or postal
box area.
Make sure you are visible, especially at night. Carry a flashlight,
or stand in a well-lit area. Wearing clothing with reflective
material will help you to be seen.
This works the same for getting off the bus. Ask the driver
to find a safe place to stop close to where you wish to get
off.
For more information about bus stops in rural areas, call NORD
Transit Information at 545-7221.
Community Travel Training
The Community Travel Training Program is a free service designed
to teach seniors and individuals with cognitive or physical
disabilities to use transit service. This Program allows individuals
to learn at their own pace.
Call 545-7221 for more information about the Community Travel
Training Program.
